Supercharged MG TC EXU. Ex Gene Ponder Collection

Chassis No:  TC9064EXU

UK Registered:  MXS 674

This stunning TC was formerly owned by world renowned Texan multi-millionaire car collector Gene Ponder. TC906EXU is a rare ‘EXU’ export model and one of only 494 which left Abingdon bound for America. In April 2007, Ponder sold the car for $81,400 at an auction at his ranch.

According to the MG T Register records, the car was built on 29th June 1949 with engine number XPAG 9767 which is still fitted to the car today.

The MG TC EXU model was the first post war MG model and the first MG model to be slightly adapted to suite the American market. It was still only available in RHD and features unique to the EXU included full-width bumpers, a centrally mounted MG medallion on the rear bumper, twin Lucas Windtone horns under the bonnet, central license-plate mounts, laminated windscreen glass, flashing turn signals and US-specification Lucas head- and tail-lights. The cockpit featured a gold pearl finish on the steering wheel (brand new on this car) as opposed to the traditional black, the rear view mirror was mounted atop the dashboard, two map lights were added, and the positions of the ammeter, oil-pressure gauge, ignition and light switches were altered. Superchargers were often fitted to add power to satisfy American tastes, often bringing power output to approximately 70 bhp and increasing torque as well.

A rare crank-driven Arnott supercharger is fitted to this TC along with Lucas “King of the Road” headlamps, fog lamps, a badge bar, and 19-inch chrome wire wheels.

The MG also has a five speed gearbox conversion, Alfin type brake drums and a VW steering box. It has had a complete restoration including new body tub.

The engine has recently been completely rebuilt by MG XPAG Engine specialist Peter Edney. The engine has one of Pete Edney’s ‘mild’ road cams, solid skirt pistons, the cylinder head has been been converted to take unleaded petrol, and is ported for better breathing and fully balanced. It produces a lot of power and torque, but remains tractable at all speeds. XPAG engines lend themselves very well to being supercharged. The car runs beautifully. This work was completed in July 2020 at a cost of £4,900.

The five speed ‘Hi-Gear’ gearbox conversion gives relaxed cruising, extra fuel economy, smooth gear changing and runs quietly. The speedo has been correctly re-calibrated to suit.

The Alfin type Aluminium brake drums provide good braking which is matched to the extra performance produced by the Supercharger.

The suspension and steering have recently been removed and rebuilt utilising a VW steering box, again supplied by Peter Edney MG. Those familiar with the model will know what a great upgrade this is. The car is very stable on the road and steers effortlessly.

The car also has an engine turned dashboard, which is reminiscent of MG race cars from the classic period.

The car has full weather equipment in excellent condition.

Unusually, the car still carries its bumpers which were only fitted to TC EXU models and the rear one still has the original MG casting which is very rare.

This stunning MG has now covered 660 miles since the total restoration commissioned by Gene Ponder and remains in fantastic order. The recent mechanical rebuild and upgrades, which were only carried out because the car had covered so few miles, makes this one of the very best TCs out there.
